Does an industrial enterprise stand a better chance of rescue if it’s involved in work that’s near the top of a government agenda than one that employs just as many people but adds nothing to that government’s image of itself?

Nicola Sturgeon’s government is pulling out all the stops to prevent a company heavily involved in renewable energy – an issue that’s close to her heart and which wins her international plaudits – from going to the wall.

But would the same amount of ministerial sweat be extended over an enterprise in a less ‘glamorous’ sector: That is the question being posed at Holyrood at present over the fate of BiFab, the fabrication company, currently involved in a massive windfarm order, that employs 1400 people in Fife and on the Isle Of Lewis.
